The importance of Technological Development

The importance of Technological Development

Technological development is one of the basic ingredients that allows companies to compete. The main function of companies is to generate wealth through their economic activity, generating jobs and economic resources with which society can deploy social policies. Without this economic capacity it is not possible to apply social development measures.

The renewable energy sector also has another important mission: to help transform the way we generate and consume energy to achieve sustainability. Climate change is currently one of the greatest challenges for humanity and the renewable sector is one of the main actors in its resolution.

In the new economy, that of innovation, it will not be possible to be competitive without the innovation of quality that originates in networks, in community. Technology centers generate knowledge and support the technological development of companies as part of that system.

At CENER we have a strong commitment to society. A fundamental part of our mission, our reason for existing, is to provide effective support to companies, developing knowledge and concepts that can be applied and subsequently incorporate the products they manufacture and facilities that operate, while favoring the very development of the renewable, which are so important for the future.

We acquire part of this knowledge working in consortiums with the best research centers in the world in various projects, which are sometimes supported by the Administration, such as, for example, European projects. We also support industrial production activity through the provision of high added value services that the private market does not currently offer. It is about providing very specialized knowledge or using unusual test infrastructures. CENER has invested around 100 million euros in its infrastructures so that the Spanish industry can develop its R & D activity in the most efficient way possible.

We are an applied research center that works in 6 energy areas in which it provides services of different types. As an example, I will mention the work that we carried out in 2 of them. In Wind Energy we develop technology for the improvement of wind turbine designs, as well as technologies for simulation and testing of offshore wind structures to improve the design conditions, or even the design of floating wind turbines; We analyze the wind as a resource for planning and exploitation, and perform R & D to reproduce real-scale component tests and thus improve their reliability, reduce the time to market and accelerate the maturation of new high-power wind turbines.

In the area of Network Integration of Renewable Energies, we develop methods and tools to integrate the accumulation of energy from different sources and the intelligent elements of energy management within the electric system; We formulate energy integration concepts that combine distribution networks, electric vehicles and transportation, combined generation, etc., that promote new management and business models, and we test components and complete concepts of microgrids for use in real installations.

Each and every one of these concepts strengthens companies in the energy sector. In some cases we are talking about continuing in the existing good line and in others we are thinking of sub-areas that are going to have an enormous importance in the medium term, such as microgrids, the development of smart cities or biorefineries for bioproducts, as well as of biofuels.

Renewables is a sector with a strong industrial base, based on innovation, with a high export capacity and which generates quality employment. It is not focused on services and does not have a technological dependence on third parties. Spanish renewable companies are recognized as leaders internationally and respond well to what can be expected after the "change of productive model" that is being discussed.

The weight of the renewable sector in Navarre is especially significant. Our Community has been a pioneer and cradle of important companies that are known all over the world and it is not a coincidence that the headquarters of the National Renewable Energy Center is located here, but one of the consequences of this leadership. From Navarra a new model of wind and photo voltaic parks was developed, and a policy and industrial activity was launched that resulted in generation figures that placed it among the most advanced regions of the world. The commitment to technological development and renewable energy continues to be fully in force. The Smart Specialization Strategy of the Autonomous Community is being updated at this time and renewable energies are one of the firm commitments.

A Navarra open to the outside, with clear objectives and working together to innovate, can become a reference "laboratory" for the implementation of large-scale renewable, an opportunity for economic development.

I conclude by reiterating that in the new economy innovation is the key piece of competitiveness. Investing in technology and research is investing in social development.
